OF THE HISTORIC DUNBAR HOTEL ON JUNE 26th, 2013
Red Yam Southern Grille has been tapped to cater the grand re-opening of the historic Dunbar Hotel on Los Angeles’ Central Ave. on June 26, 2013. Red Yam Southern Grille is being developed by the Okra Restaurant Group, Inc. and was created as a fast casual hand crafted/chef driven Southern food concept by renowned Chef Richard Petty, author of the award winning cookbook Beyond Soul Food, Modern Heritage Cuisine, an Amazon Kindle Best-Seller and the Radio Show Host of Let’s Do Lunch with Chef Richard Petty on LA Talk Live.
The Dunbar Hotel, which once was at the heart of the Jazz scene in Los Angeles and hosted the likes of Cab Calloway, Billie Holliday and Louis Armstrong fell into disrepair over the years and eventually closed, is being given a second life as senior residential housing. From the June 12, 2013 edition of the Los Angeles Times Newspaper, Bob Pool writes in an article titled the Rebirth of a Jazz Age Sanctuary, “The Dunbar, which opened in 1928, was designated as a city Historic-Cultural Landmark in 1974 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places two years later. That means its original architecture and Art Deco motif have been carefully preserved during the renovation, which is a partnership involving Thomas Safran & Associates, the nonprofit Coalition for Responsible Community Development and the city’s Housing Authority and Community Redevelopment Agency. Andrew Gross, president of development for the Safran firm, praised City Councilwoman Jan Perry for helping coordinate the redevelopment.”
